limbo and dreams (updated)

I am still in limbo. My head is healed and I feel more like myself, except for some odd symptoms (my jaw is still freezing shut intermittently for a minute or so. It's so annoying. And embarrassing. It's not really something I can hide and it happens at the most awkward times).

I had my surgery on May 9. Everything said to me leading up to that implied that moving ahead was urgent. And yet here we are. I have a lot of faith in my medical team but this time information is not forthcoming and it's making me crazy. I can't plan a thing and I would just like some kind of information. I know I haven't fallen through the cracks. I would just like someone to explain to me where things are at.

I like information. It makes me feel in control.

So don't ask me when I will be having treatment because I don't know.

On another note, I had some strange dreams last week.

I dreamed that the area in which I lived was being flooded and I had to rush back and get a few things before all was washed away. When I arrived at home, though, the rain stopped, the sun came out and there was a brilliant blue sky. I didn't have to leave after all.

In another dream, a small furry mammal was hit somehow and fell to the ground, dead. In my dream it was a "possum" but it looked more like a groundhog. The body lay in the same spot throughout the dream and I would check on it periodically to see if it was still there. The last time I looked before waking, the animal jumped to its feet and bolted up a tree. After several days of lying still, it wasn't dead at all.

Deconstruct that. No so hard.

Now let's get some news, so I can follow my dreams.

Update: I finally have dates. I don't start for a couple of weeks. I asked why and was told that my oncologist said that it's "not urgent". I asked if this was because of the decent MRI and the nurse said she thought so. After the first date in June, I will go in weekly for a few weeks and then I guess we will re-visit the schedule.

I feel mostly relieved because I can plan my life a little. I just wish I didn't have these annoying symptoms that remind me what's happening.

driving dreams

As some of you know, I don't drive. I've had several false starts. I even passed my in-car test when I spent a summer in the Yukon in 1986 but didn't take the final step to have that license validated.*

In total, I have had a "learner's permit" three times, taken drivers' education courses twice (not finishing either time) and taken countless in-car driving lessons. There have been many people who have offered to drive with me so I could practice who have not wanted to repeat the experience.

Still, "get drivers' licence" has been carried forward on my "to-do" list for many years. I've never quite given up on the idea but I never seem to follow through. I think I have a phobia at this point.

A while ago, I had two dreams in the same night (before the latest round of MRIs and meeting with the neurosurgeon. My brain worries were present but not front and centre). Both were about driving and were so clear that I wrote them down when I awoke. If you know anything about driving dreams, I'd love to know what you think.

Dream 1:
I had borrowed a red van from a friend. It was parked in front of the neighbours' across the street . This is not a legal parking spot. I decided at the last minute that I shouldn't drive the van on my own and I went to get Tim (my spouse). When we got back, there was a big truck parked where the van had been surrounded by workers loading it up. The red van was nowhere to be seen.
I asked one of the men unloading the truck about the van and he told me they moved it one street over because it wasn't supposed to be parked there and they'd needed the spot. He told me, raising his eyebrows, that I had left the keys in the ignition and gave them to me.

Dream 2:

I was at a strip mall with Daniel (my 11 year old) and we got into a grey four door sedan, him on the driver's side and me on the other. We started going and I kept saying to Daniel, “Sit up!” “Press the brakes!” We drove through the parking lot without hitting anything or anyone and then through a 4 way intersection and up a side street filled with pedestrians. We even drove by a baby crawling along the side of the road, passing very close. The baby seemed oblivious. The street ended at the top of a hill and we coasted to a stop.
We got out and folded the car up and wheeled it like a wheelbarrow back down the street. I went to find Tim so he could drive us home. I was very relieved but also worried that someone had reported our license plate or caught us on camera.

I borrowed a book from the library about dreams. There was a whole chapter on cars that didn't really speak to me, except for the following "the movement of your car is a metaphor for the way you're trying to make progress in life and the extent to which you feel in control." There was nothing really helpful about kids (nothing about narrowly missing babies or having your kid drive the car) and nothing about a fear of driving.

A key thing about both dreams is that while they were anxiety provoking, both had positive outcomes. I got the van back in the first dream (even though I'd left keys in the ignition) and no babies were crushed under the wheels of my car in the second. It's clear that I'm feeling a lack of control but there must be something good going on between my ears if things ended as they did. It is interesting to me that, in both cases, I felt embarrassed and worried about getting into trouble.

What do you think? I'd love to know about any similar dreams folks have had and where you have turned to find answers.

*The driving tests in Ross River, where I was living, were at that time administered by the RCMP. They gave me a letter that said I'd passed but I was supposed to take it to White Horse to be validated and get an official licence. I never got around to it, perhaps because I didn't really believe that I deserved to have passed. Ross River had only one 4-way intersection, no traffic lights and no place where I could parallel park. Still, I managed to make a right turn into the left lane, facing what would have been on-coming traffic, had there been any.

I might have been a little intimidated by the armed police officer administering the test. I still can't believe he passed me.

up to something

I have a project.

It's taking some planning and a fair bit of work. It won't change the world but it will make my world  a more fun, brighter place. At least I think so. It may even inspire a few people.

I'm not working alone but I'm not sure how many of us there will be. It's something I've been wanting to do for years but an awesome friend proposed a date and an action plan. We're being a little bit subversive, a little bit creative, a little bit brave and deliberately frivolous.

I think I need more fun in my life. I need to do some things just because they make me happy, not aiming for perfection, not trying to be "productive" and not with any particular purpose in mind. We're just going to put our heads together, set our hands to work, make a leap into action and then sit back and see what happens.

I'm having fun.

wishing for a dreamless sleep

I'm about to hit the hay. I've been plagued by wild dreams of late and I'm hoping tonight's sleep will be deep and dreamless.

No discovering that I've not graduated from high school.

No returning to live with my parents while I complete school.

No wandering the halls unsure where I'm supposed to go and unable to find the office or a time-table.

No discovering I'm way, way hopelessly behind.

No finding myself responsible for other people's babies.

No getting my stomach pumped.

No crawling into bed, only to discover that I've let myself into a stranger's home and I'm under the covers of their guest bed in their living room.

No mowing the same stranger's giant lawn under a blinding hot sun.

No dead dogs on the lawn.

No horrible hair cuts.

Just sweet, dreamless sleep.

Wish me luck.

my kids are alright

I had a dream a few nights ago.

My kids were in a giant flash mob, dancing their hearts out, surrounded by dozens of other kids and adults. They were exuberant and focused, their movements fluid and in synch with those around them. My heart swelled with pride and joy.

I learned that the flash mob had been created to drum up excitement over an upcoming performance. In a couple of hours, my kids would go on stage and perform. I could tell they were ready.

Then I was handed a note. My own performance was scheduled for right after theirs. I was wholly unprepared. I hadn't even looked at my script. I was rushing off to find it when my alarm went off.

Sacha was in a play very recently. And they did organize a flash mob a week before the performance, as a form of advertisement. And Sacha performed beautifully. My heart did swell with pride.

In part, my subconscious might have been remembering the play but I choose to believe that I was also sending myself a message.

Life with metastatic breast cancer is filled with uncertainty. But no matter what happens, my kids will be fine. They are smart, talented, resourceful and resillient. They have friends and family who love them. My kids will be alright.

a wild and crazy goal

I have been overwhelmed and touched by all the donations I've collected for the Run for the Cure.

Our team, No Pink for Profit, has more than thirty members.

I'm - ahem - tickled pink.

I've raised $1,558.00, way more than I'd anticipated. And maybe all this generosity and enthusiasm have made me delirious but I've begun to wonder, "what if I could make it an even $2000.00?"

What do you think? Is it possible? Want to help?

dream analysis

I had a very vivid dream last night. I had a arrived at a big hall full of people and remembered that I was there to give a speech. Then, as I approached the podium, I realized that I was completely unprepared - I had forgotten to prepare anything to say.

My stomach dropped down to my toes.

Now I have never, as far as I can recollect, forgotten to prepare for a speech or presentation. And while I am speaking at a fundraiser in Montreal in June and I am a bit nervous, I'm not really concerned that I won't be ready (not yet, anyway).

Life has been full of challenges lately and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Some of these have been expected and others have come at me from out of the blue (or at least that's how it's felt). And I have definitely been feeling ill-equipped to respond.

When I was a little girl, I had to play dodgeball at every recess in Grades 4 and 5. Our teachers thought it kept us out of trouble but I just remember every recess as a misery. My stress levels would be very high as the balls came at me. I'd dodge a few, catch the odd one (mostly out of sheer luck) and get walloped hard, at least once in every fifteen minute game. Getting hit didn't hurt that badly (I was more stunned and winded than actually injured) but I always welcomed the moment that the bell would ring and I could return to the safety of the classroom.

Life (I'm sure you see where I'm going with this) has been a little like playing dodgeball lately. My skills have improved but I still don't enjoy playing that particular game. I'd rather take a walk along the canal (or a nap would be good).

For the most part, things are fine around here. But I wouldn't complain if life were just a tiny bit less interesting.

relieved

I dreamed that I said the following to my spouse:

"I don't regret the dogs. I sometimes regret the cat. But I really, really regret the rhino."

deconstruction not required

I have been dreaming about houses again (you can read previous posts on this subject here and here).

In this latest dream, I am in the middle of moving. It's not my choice to move and I didn't choose the new house. I like my old house and my old neighbourhood and I feel quite sad to leave them behind.

The new house is not filthy or scary or rundown, just unfamiliar and not what I have chosen for myself.

In the dream, I am trying to make the best of it, figure out how to set up this new home so that I feel safe, comfortable and happy.

I think I'm feeling a bit at loose ends this days.
