my brain is a sieve

I was really looking forward to my book club tonight. I even tweeted about my excitement.

We read Run, by Ann Patchett. I really liked the book but I was especially looking forward to getting out and seeing my friends.

I really wanted a beer with dinner (we were having pizza) but I passed because there is always wine at book club. I even got my spouse to pick up a bottle this afternoon, so that I could contribute.

I gathered up my purse and my knitting. I hadn't organized a ride, so I got ready to call a cab. I looked up the host's email to confirm her address and because I wanted to make sure that I was planning on going to the right house. My memory is not what it once was.

I was right about the house but wrong about the date.

My book club is November 30th.

My kids felt bad for me because I took a shower and put on clean clothes for nothing.

I am sulking telling myself that, next week, I will enjoy myself twice as much for having had to wait.

Hey, look on the bright side: you also could have been one week late... (That is what usually happens to me..)

so did you get all the way there before realizing the date was wrong? or did you check before leaving? either way, sad for you....

Oh, a book club! How fun! I'm sorry that you got "all dressed up with no place to go" (as my mom used to say,) but now you'll have many more days of anticipation for that good time that's a few days away.

I had to giggle about your kids feeling sorry for you 'cause you took a shower for nothing! Too funny!

Laurie,

This adventure in premature visitation must be endemic to book clubs. Years ago, on a particularly grim evening at our house, with a lot of animal and childrens' detritus lying about, several (I think just two) squeeky clean and well turned out book club members arrived at my door for a meeting...a week early. They looked at me and I looked at them. What followed as they apprehended my state of disarray, was a laughing fit both outside and in, that was hard to stop and well worth the visit. I tried inviting the two in but they couldn't get away fast enough.

I have done that before and am sure I will again.

How did you like Run? I love Ann Patchett and enjoyed the book, but to my mind it was not as good as some of her others (bel canto is one of my all time favorites).

i liked run but it didn't come close to bel canto, which is also one of my favourite books of all time. i am looking forward to the discussion, which is really taking place tonight.
